As he arrived in this keystone city (New York) of American Roman Catholicism, the Pope was greeted by President Carter's wife, Rosalynn, who hailed him as a "champion of the vision that unites mankind - our Creator's vision of a world of justice and a world of peace."

Responding to the enthusiasm that engulfed his motorcade through the city, Pope John Paul looked out on a drizzle-soaked crowd of 100,000 gathered for the mass on the Boston Common and declared: "I greet you, America the beautiful!"

The crowd responded with cries of "Viva Papa!"

*As sung by International Artist Peter Columbo

The Pope's visit to America in October 1979 was a news event of such magnitude that it demanded, and got, an extraordinary, all-out effort from the full staff of the New York Times. Here are some highlights of this historic collectors 4 disc set:

80,000 gather in Yankee Stadium for the historic Papal Mass, the largest recorded in 14 years - CD #3, track 6

More than 60,000 people waited in the persistent down pour of rain at Shea Stadium - CD #3, track 12

As the Pope spoke, Terrance Cardinal Cooke stood behind him, holding down his short white shoulder cape, fighting the harbor winds. Cardinal Cooke addresses the crowd at Battery Park - CD #3, track 10

Pope at Battery Park, pays homage to American Ideal - CD #3, track 11

On the day Pope John Paul II landed (CD #1, track 1) in Boston, President Jimmy Carter stated "We must revitalize our basic human values like freedom, patriotism, duty, trust, family and love. Our outpouring of affection for the pope showed how deep and strong those values are within us." - New York Post, Oct. 12, 1979
